Discover What Truly Matters to You — And Learn to Prioritize It Like Your Life Depends on It

In the noise of everyday life, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Work deadlines, endless notifications, comparison traps on social media, and a calendar filled with obligations, none of which may actually bring us closer to the life we want.

At Epic Gear and within the Live Epic Movement, we believe every man should take time to strip life down to its core and ask:

“What is actually important to me?”

“Am I living like it is?”

This isn’t just about productivity. It’s about living with purpose. And if you’re not clear on what matters most, your energy will always be spent chasing things that don’t.

Let’s change that.

Step 1: Get Clear on What Actually Matters

Most people don’t lack time, they lack clarity. You need to define your non-negotiables.

Here’s how:

Ask Yourself:

  • What activities make me feel most alive?
  • What do I want my legacy to be?
  • If I had only a year left, how would I spend my time?
  • Who are the people I never regret spending time with?

Categories to Reflect On:

  • Health (Physical and mental)
  • Relationships (Family, friends, mentorship)
  • Growth (Skills, knowledge, faith)
  • Purpose (Work, impact, contribution)
  • Joy (Play, hobbies, travel)

Write down your answers. Circle the ones that jump out at you.

Step 2: Audit Your Current Life

Now ask: “Does how I spend my time reflect what I say matters?”

Take a brutal, honest inventory. Look at:

  • Your screen time
  • Your calendar
  • Your bank statements
  • Your mental energy

Do these align with your values? Or are you living someone else’s version of success?

Step 3: Cut the Noise, Protect the Signal

Here’s the hard truth: If you don’t ruthlessly protect what matters, the world will steal your time for you.

What to do:

  • Say no more often. Not every opportunity is for you. If it’s not aligned—it’s a distraction.
  • Set boundaries. Protect your mornings, your workouts, your family dinners. Lock them in.
  • Make it visible. Write your priorities down. Post them somewhere you see daily.

Step 4: Design Your Day Around What Matters

Turn your values into action:

  • Want better mental health? Block 5 mins daily for the Epic Reset.
  • Want deeper connection with your kids? Make bedtime a sacred ritual.
  • Want to grow spiritually? Start each day with 10 mins of prayer or journaling.
  • Want to build a legacy? Put in the reps—daily, focused, intentional work on your mission.

Your calendar should reflect your convictions, not just your commitments.

Step 5: Recalibrate Often

Life changes. Seasons shift. What mattered last year may not matter now.

Set a monthly check-in with yourself:

  • What’s working?
  • What’s draining me?
  • What do I need more or less of?

This is how you stay aligned with your true north.

Final Thought: Don’t Just Live , Live Epic

You weren’t made to live on autopilot. You were made to move with purpose, to lead yourself before leading others, and to build a life that’s defined by what matters, not what distracts.

So ask yourself:

Are you prioritizing what you say is important?

Or are you just hoping it fits somewhere?

Because the truth is, what you prioritize is what you become.
